Content
The unit adopts a framework of children as learners who construct their understanding of mathematics and numeracy in the home, the classroom and the wider community.
This unit aims to enhance pre-service teachers' understanding of how mathematics is learned and therefore taught in primary school settings. Students will develop their understanding of the proficiencies and how children’s mathematical concepts develop in the key areas of mathematics: number and algebra, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability.
Published teaching and learning resources to guide planning and pedagogical decisions to support children’s understanding of mathematical concepts will be drawn on and critiqued. A range of effective teaching strategies and aids, as well as effective ways of incorporating the use of learning technologies will be addressed. State, national, and international curriculum materials will be referred to and used extensively.
