Before we can assess your application, we need you to write a detailed personal statement. Here’s how:

How to structure your personal statement

It’s up to you how you can best tell your story, here are a few tips:

• Start with an introduction that sets the scene.
• Follow up with neat paragraphs that have one idea each, telling us about your experience and learning goals.
• End your personal statement with a concluding paragraph that draws your story together.

What to write about in your personal statement

You can tell us about you and significant people, experiences and circumstances that have shaped your life and learning – these can be positive or negative in nature. Reflect on how these have influenced your character, sense of self, motivations, attitudes and behaviours towards learning. Examine what you have learned about yourself and how you intend to apply this self-learning to your studies at Deakin University. You can write up to 10,000 characters.

Make sure to include a reference

You need to include at least one reference in your statement. Your reference could include, but is not limited to:

• supporting evidence from a newspaper article, photograph, media coverage or academic literature
• a quote or a passage from a book, movie or person, that resonates with you.

Resume *

You can write between one and three pages. Here’s what to include:

• employment history
• community service and volunteer activities
• awards and achievements.

You can also include things like: the duration you were involved in an organisation, the frequency of your participation, the type of involvement you had, and details/examples about your involvement.
