Learn Indonesian language skills to get a competitive edge
With more than 23 million first-language Indonesian speakers (140 million people speak Indonesian as a second language), Indonesian will give you a competitive edge that allows you to expand your employment options far beyond Australian shores. On top of this, in-country language programs provide you with the opportunity to travel overseas and try out your language skills with native speakers.

Higher Degrees by Research (supervised research)
Research degrees are research based master’s or PhD programs that focus on a single area of expertise. They provide students the opportunity to carry out highly specialised research under expert supervision.
Career opportunities
Indonesia is an attractive destination for western business, with many major corporations operating there. These include Australian companies such as ANZ, Rio Tinto, Commonwealth Bank, and IAG. As a result, demand for fluent users of Indonesian is high. The language remains one of the most widely taught in Victorian schools, and there is a need for well-trained Indonesian teachers.
Careers in this field include work in:
- community and government organisations
- community health organisations
- the communications industry
- the education sector
- ethnic affairs associations
- foreign affairs departments
- multicultural organisations
- tourism associations
- translation services.
Flexible study, no matter your course
In addition to our language diplomas, languages can be studied as a major or minor sequence within the Bachelor of Arts and as a major within the Bachelor of International Studies and Bachelor of International Studies (Global Scholar). On top of this, a language may be able to be studied across many of Deakin’s other courses.
Learn the language faster in the real world
Thanks to our in-country language programs, you can try out and develop your language skills with native speakers in Indonesia. For six weeks you'll study the Indonesian language and culture in its own environment while gaining course credit.
We studied in Indonesia for six weeks, developing our language skills to the point where we delivered weekly class presentations in Indonesian.
