Research topic
Two PhD scholarship opportunities are available as part of a new Australian Research Council funded Discovery Project: Youth Futures after Mobility (YFAM). The project is a multi-method longitudinal study of transnationally mobile youth and their transitions to adulthood, led by Professor Anita Harris (Deakin University) and Professor Loretta Baldassar (Edith Cowan University). YFAM will investigate what helps and hinders the social and economic integration of young people after living abroad. It builds on and extends the Youth Mobilities, Aspirations & Pathways Project (YMAP), which investigated how mobility shapes young people’s economic, social and civic aspirations, opportunities and outcomes. YFAM now considers challenges and opportunities for transnationally mobile youth as they age, face decisions about remaining or returning, and seek to settle.
Project aim
Expressions of interest are invited for an exciting opportunity to join a major research study in youth mobility and migration studies. Two PhD scholarships are available. The PhD projects will be integrated into the ARC funded Youth Mobilities multi-method longitudinal study YFAM, with its foundations in YMAP, which successfully supported 5 HDR students (see the project website here for details about former doctoral projects). Candidates with interest in quantitative longitudinal studies, mixed methods and qualitative methodologies are invited to apply.
The successful candidates will contribute to youth studies and migration research and the project’s aims while developing their own research focus and undertaking an independent but nested PhD project. Candidates with quantitative skills suited to conducting and managing surveys and longitudinal projects are encouraged to apply for scholarship project.
- Candidates interested in qualitative and/or mixed methods are encouraged to apply for scholarship project
- Both students will collect new data as well as have the opportunity to draw on the project data set. The students will be supervised by Professor Anita Harris (principal) and Professor Loretta Baldassar (external).
Scholarship Project 1: Comparison of Mobile Youth (quantitative). This PhD project will involve comparison of mobile youth pre and post Covid, using the existing project data set and collecting comparative quantitative data from a new youth cohort. The specific focus of the project can be on any topic related to YFAM’s investigation of transnationally mobile youth and their experiences and aspirations regarding transition and settling. The successful candidate will have quantitative research skills, including ability to recruit and maintain a new and large mobile youth cohort and administer a survey, and training in suitable techniques and software for quantitative data collection, management, coding and comparative analysis. They will have a background in Sociology, Anthropology, Education, Cultural Studies, Social Geography or cognate discipline.
Scholarship Project 2: Mobile Youth, Transitions & Settling (mixed methods or qualitative). This PhD project can be on any topic related to YFAM’s focus on transnationally mobile youth and their experiences and aspirations regarding transition and settling after mobility, including in conditions of ongoing mobilities. We welcome innovative research proposals that align with YFAM while bringing fresh perspectives to migration and youth studies research. The successful candidate will have qualitative and/or mixed methods research skills and a background in Sociology, Anthropology, Education, Cultural Studies, Social Geography or cognate discipline.
