HDR Scholarship - GenAI in Education

Research topic

We are looking for applicants for our PhD scholarship for Australian and New Zealand candidates (AUS/NZ citizens or Australian permanent residents) as part of the CSIRO Next Generation Emerging Technology Graduate Programs. The successful candidate will be one of the cohort of students across Deakin University and Western Sydney University, for the CSIRO Next Generation Emerging Technology Graduate Program for Empowering Humans within the Metaverse.

Project aim

The successful candidate will work as part of a team (including other PhDs) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations to teach speaking and listening skills to school children. The project is in collaboration with Kinetic Education, an industry-leading online platform for tutoring for English, maths and other subjects. Their lesson design and teaching pedagogy have been developed in consultations with teachers, principals, university lecturers, educational experts and psychologists. The project will empower the existing platform and educational approaches with AI innovations to deliver lessons and assessments for speaking, listening, and general communication skills to the cohort of school students. The successful candidate will work with the Kinetic Education team throughout the project, to leverage their diverse and resourceful industry expertise, as well as to provide ongoing project updates and progress.

This scholarship is available over 3.5 years.

  • Stipend of $43,333 per annum tax exempt (2025 rate)

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible you must:

  • be a domestic candidate. Domestic includes candidates with Australian Citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency or New Zealand Citizenship.
  • meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements
  • be enrolling full time and hold an honours degree (first class) or an equivalent standard master's degree with a substantial research component.

Additional desirable criteria include:

  • An ideal candidate will have technical and research experience with AI and related technologies, strong software development skills, a passion for educational technologies, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
