Research topic

Plastic pollution and food waste are two critical global challenges that require immediate attention and innovative solutions. This packaging reduces plastic pollution by developing biodegradable plastic as an alternative to petroleum-based plastic packaging. This packaging also contributes to waste reduction by turning bread waste into a value-added product. While numerous biodegradable packaging solutions have emerged in recent years, many are made from edible source materials such as wheat, rice, and semolina, raising concerns regarding food security. This project will address this concern by developing biodegradable packaging materials from food waste.

Project aim

This innovative approach will contribute to reducing plastic pollution and food waste, effectively turning agro-food waste into a value-added product. This research contributes to the first National Science and Research Priority of Australia, which aims to use new technologies to contribute to healthy Australian lifestyles and global food security, by reducing foodborne diseases and food waste.
