Deakin Scholarship for Excellence and Equity

A scholarship for bachelor and honours students who demonstrate outstanding passion, perseverance and commitment to their studies, extracurricular activities, sports, the arts, community service, or leadership while overcoming socio-economic barriers or difficult circumstances.

Important dates

All applications for Trimester/Semester 1 2025 open 5 September 2024.

Bachelor applications for Trimester/Semester 1 2025 close 7 January 2025 at 5pm.

Honours applications for Trimester/Semester 1 2025 close 12 February 2025 at 5pm.

Offer rounds for bachelor Scholarship applications

Early round: to be considered for an early round scholarship offer, please submit your application and all supporting documentation by 5 December 2024 at 5pm.

Round 1: to be considered for a Round 1 scholarship offer, please submit your application and all supporting documentation by 7 January 2025 at 5pm.

We will be aiming for full allocation by round 1.

Re-offer round: to be considered for any remaining scholarships not taken up in previous offer rounds, you will need to submit your application and all supporting documentation by 31 January 2025 at 5pm.

All scholarships will be offered within six weeks of the re-offer round closing date.

Benefits

This scholarship is awarded for the normal full time duration of the course.

$5000 per year ($625 per credit point) paid as cash or towards student contributions (tuition fees) - the choice is yours!

Eligibility criteria

Please ensure you meet all criteria before submitting an application.

To be eligible you must be:

  • an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident or holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa
  • commencing in a bachelor or honours degree in Trimester/Semester 1 2025 in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
  • enrolled full time at Deakin University in Trimester/Semester 1 2025 unless there are exceptional circumstances preventing full time study
  • able to demonstrate one of the following:
    • an ATAR of at least 80
    • a Weighted Average Mark (WAM)/Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 80 in previous tertiary study
    • leadership experience
    • elite sports performance
    • community service
    • volunteer activities
    • achievement in the Arts
    • any other achievement.
  • experiencing an area of hardship
  • meet one of the following:
    • attend a Deakin under-represented school - check if your school is on the list here, or:
    • live or study in a regional or remote home or school location, or:
    • Indigenous Australian descent.

Areas of hardship

The Deakin Scholarship for Excellence and Equity is aimed to provide support for students experiencing hardship.

Areas of hardship include:

  • financial hardship – either that you are in receipt of a means-tested Centrelink benefit, Low Income Health Care Card or have a personal or family taxable income below the threshold determined by the University
  • rural, regional or remote home location
  • disability/long term medical condition
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background
  • arrived in Australia as a refugee
  • other demonstrable hardship.

Conditions

Continued eligibility is subject to maintaining a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65.

Supporting documents

As part of the application process you will also be required to upload supporting documentation by the various round closing dates listed above.

Make sure you choose the correct Document type when you upload your documents as it will make a difference. If your documents are uploaded into the incorrect type they will not be considered when assessing your application. Remember it is quality, not quantity, which you need to provide. Aim to provide documents which are current, relevant and concise.

The supporting documentation required includes (if applicable):

  • evidence of your previous WAM or GPA (if completed at another institution)
  • evidence of any leadership activities or community service achievements
  • evidence of any sporting or other achievements
  • evidence of your financial hardship
  • evidence of your medical condition.

When applying direct to Deakin for these scholarships, select the 'Undergraduate Scholarship Application Tri/Sem 1 2025' option and, if eligible, your application will automatically be considered for this scholarship. At the same time your application will also be considered for other scholarships that you are eligible for in the selection process.

This reduces the number of scholarships you have to apply for and increases your chance of receiving a Deakin scholarship.

You can apply for this scholarship directly to Deakin through our Scholarship Application Portal.

Select the 'Undergraduate Scholarship Application Tri/Sem 1 2025' option and, if eligible, your application will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

This reduces the number of scholarships you have to apply for and increases your chances of receiving a Deakin scholarship.

Apply for this scholarship

The scholarship application process is highly competitive with a limited number of scholarships available. Unfortunately, not all eligible applicants will receive one.

What happens next

Your application will be assessed and ranked based on the details you provide and your supporting documentation.

For bachelor students we will commence offering a limited number of scholarships towards the end of December 2024 with the remainder of scholarships offered progressively from mid-January 2025. To give your application the best chance possible of being considered in all offer rounds, you should submit your application and supporting documentation by 5 December 2024 at 5pm.

If you are successful, you will be contacted by the email address you nominated in your application portal account, unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted. You'll find out if you are successful usually within six weeks of the Re-offer round closing date. If you have not received an offer by this time, you have been unsuccessful. You can view the status of your application via your scholarship application portal account.
