How did you make friends and what sort of things did you do together?
Moving abroad to England for an exchange program was nerve wracking, I was concerned about feeling isolated and finding it difficult to make friends in a foreign country. However, these fears began to disappear when I connected with fellow students from Deakin, who were also part of the exchange program. Our social circle widened as we mingled with students from the University of Exeter, leading to a unique blend of Australian and British friendships. These friendships became an integral part of my life abroad, offering more than just academic enrichment but a gateway to exploring diverse cultures and forming enduring bonds.
Together, we embarked on various adventures, from exploring the historical cities of Edinburgh and Inverness in Scotland to experiencing a heartwarming Christmas in Wales, invited by a Welsh friend from our group. These trips were not just about sightseeing but about building relationships that alleviated any homesickness and made the exchange program an invaluable part of my life.
Did you go on any memorable trips to explore your host country or maybe a nearby country?
I started my travels in Exeter, England, where I studied at the University of Exeter. My next destinations were Edinburgh and Inverness in Scotland, known for their breathtaking landscapes and distinct charm. Then, I visited Bath, where I delved into its rich Roman history and architecture which was both enlightening and stunning. The Christmas atmosphere in Wales, with its majestic castles and scenic mountains, felt like a cosy home away from home. In France, Disneyland Paris was a highlight, bringing out a sense of childhood wonder with its theme parks and parades. Another memorable moment in France was seeing the Eiffel Tower light up the Parisian night, which was truly captivating. London, however, stole my heart with its vibes, people, the enchanting Warner Bros Studio Tour where Harry Potter was filmed, and a live concert by my favourite rapper, making my dreams come true. My journey concluded with a brief yet fascinating stop in Beijing, offering a glimpse into a culture vastly different from my experiences in the UK and Europe.
How did your trip add value to your studies ie. Did you gain credit? Was it to increase you employability?
Studying in England was particularly enlightening due to the foundational role of British Law in Australian Law. This experience allowed me to appreciate the subtle differences in legal education between the two countries. Understanding these nuances has deepened my comprehension of Australian Law, given its roots in the British legal system. This comparative study has equipped me with a broader perspective, enabling me to approach legal problems and concepts with a more informed and critical mindset. This not only enriches my academic pursuits but also enhances my attractiveness to future employers, especially those dealing with international or comparative law issues.
Furthermore, studying abroad greatly boosted my confidence. Immersing myself in a new country, adapting to its academic system, and overcoming the challenges of living and studying abroad fostered a sense of independence and self-reliance.
What is your one piece of advice for a student who is preparing to study abroad? How should they prepare?
For students preparing to study abroad, my advice is to embrace openness and independence. It's essential to approach this experience with confidence and the understanding that exploring new cultures and places is a significant part of the journey. Being organised, making checklists, and planning your trips carefully are crucial steps to making the most of your time abroad.
Remember to cherish and enjoy the journey, embracing every experience, whether good or bad, as they contribute to your personal development and the unique story you'll have to tell. Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity that offers not only academic growth but also personal enrichment, independence, and a treasure of unforgettable memories.
