Sweden – Henry and William
Students: Henry and William
Course: Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Laws
Program: SULaw Summer Program 2024, Stockholm University, Sweden
William: Our experience in Stockholm Sweden went for a duration of 2 weeks. Despite limited time, it did not stop myself and my friends from making the most of our forthcoming experience, studying both units of World Trade Law and Intellectual Property Rights in Online and Digital Environments.
On day 1 of classes I was quick to observe the diversity in the room. I counted out of the 32 students in the class, 21 of which were from different countries, places ranging from Latvia and Estonia, to Brazil, the Caribbean, Ukraine, Hungary, Italy, China, and as far as South Africa. This provided for much robust discussion and different perspectives, so valuable for our learning.
In addition to classes each day and our final take home-exam for each subject, we made the most of our spare time by exploring the picturesque city of Stockholm and its surrounds. The beauty was even at our backdoor; quick to realise that Stockholm University campus is located in a National Park! We kayaked on the stunning lake of Brunnsviken, took a boat tour of Djurgården, learnt the Viking game of Kubb and enjoyed traditional Fika; a Swedish coffee break. Whilst sightseeing at places like Gamla Stan and watching the Euros at bars like SUS and Stora Metjens Grand, we came so close to those who were just strangers to us 2 weeks prior. We had an incredible experience in Stockholm and made many funny and amazing memories that will stick with us for a lifetime. As I flew home from Stockholm I felt an immense gratitude, ready to embark on another trimester of Law back in Australia.
I have been extremely fortunate to study a bachelor’s degree of Law and Commerce, incorporating these highly valuable international experiences. I recommend that all students should take up any opportunity that Deakin offers, but I especially applaud the Deakin Study Abroad Program for being so diligent in creating these memorable opportunities for students.
Henry: Studying at Stockholm University was a great opportunity to escape a cold Geelong winter and experience a beautiful city while also earning a credit point. Staying on the new Albano Campus, Stockholm University had esteemed lecturers in their field who provided engaging and informative learning environments. Despite the units being inherently intensive, surrounding myself with like-minded people from around the globe ensured I could learn complex subjects while also experiencing the gorgeous environment around me.
This program, which lasted two weeks in total, allowed me to enjoy an international learning experience while being home in time for Trimester 2. With Stockholm University being my second short-term abroad program, I knew the bulk of the limited time I had in the program should be absorbed. I made friends from a variety of countries who I still talk to today, and I have fond memories of the lectures, where students’ enthusiasm was contagious.
The program at Stockholm University was very entertaining and informative. From attending the Stockholm City Hall where the Nobel Prize is heard, to playing the Swedish game of Kubb with the locals, the program was culturally and socially fascinating. We were given ample time to explore the city and the forests of Stockholm, whilst also having enough time to form relationships with the lecturers and fellow students alike.
Studying at multiple international universities has certainly been a highlight in my life. I am now aware of the multitude of career opportunities in which my Deakin degrees can enable me to pursue. Studying abroad has given me the tools to approach learning from a more global perspective, and I am grateful for the personal and professional growth it has afforded me.
Deakin allows these experiences to be seamless and stress free. Studying abroad used to be a daunting idea to me, but the process at Deakin ensured that all my questions were answered. Despite having done short-term partner programs two years in a row, I wish I had the electives left to do another. I am now a large advocate for the multitude of international programs that Deakin operates. I am always that friend who recommends studying abroad through Deakin, and I am thankful for Deakin for facilitating life-changing experiences for me.
