If you have a blood relative in Melbourne and would like your child to be able to have occasional short stays with them, please know that Deakin has some requirements:
- Deakin allows each student to have one registered blood relative that they can have short-term stays with. Parents must register this blood relative by completing this online form
- The blood relative must be 21 years or older
- Stays must be short (no more than 3 days, usually Friday to Sunday).
- Before each stay, you must email ISS for permission at least 5 working days in advance, with your written approval. In this email you must specify the dates of the stay.
- Travel to other states is not allowed for these visits.
You will be notified of any short-term stay requests made by your child. Should you not want the leave of absence to occur, you will need to notify us immediately.
These rules only apply until your child turns 18. After that, there will be no restrictions on how long they can stay with relatives. Thank you, and we look forward to supporting your child’s journey at Deakin!
If you have any questions, please email the Deakin International Student Support Team at iss@deakin.edu.au.
Privacy and Collection Statement
Deakin University (Deakin) is collecting your personal information, your child’s personal information and your relative’s personal information for the primary purpose of organising a request for an overnight visit by a Deakin student under the age of 18 outside of their approved homestay for a short period. The information will be shared with the student’s guardianship service so they are aware of where the student is staying for the relevant period.
For these purposes Deakin may also provide this information to authorised staff members in the International Student Services Support Unit and their supervisors. Any other disclosure will be made as required or permitted by law. You are not required to provide the information requested, however if the information is not provided, the request for an overnight visit cannot be considered further.
Deakin collects, uses, discloses, and manages personal information it holds, including requests by individuals for access to their personal information in accordance with the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) and the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic). Further information about Deakin’s privacy practices is available at deakin.edu.au/privacy
