Inductions

Undergraduate, PODBL and masters by coursework students

Commencing School of Engineering undergraduate and masters by coursework students are required to complete an online safety induction in their first trimester as a zero credit point. This is a general laboratory safety unit. You will complete either:

  • unit code SEE700 (masters by coursework)
  • unit code SEJ010 (undergraduate).

The Safety Unit must be followed by a laboratory induction into the appropriate workspace. This induction is specialised for each individual laboratory and allows the inductee to work in the area under minimal supervision, completing general tasks for that area but not to operate specific machinery, i.e. specialised power tools, experimental rigs, specialised scientific equipment, mills, 3D printer etc.

This induction is offered to undergraduate students during PODBL course units.

FYP and masters students

All final year project and masters students completing a laboratory based project must complete the following steps prior to commencement of their project:

  1. Enrol in Lab Safety Training for SEBE Staff, HDR and Honours Students in CloudDeakin (if the link does not work, follow this process).
  2. Complete the Laboratory Safety Training (5 modules) and the appropriate Engineering Level 2 Safety Induction (video and quiz).
  3. Download project risk assessment form (PRA) and budget form from your unit site or from the forms site. If your work is going to involve chemicals, please also download the chemical risk assessment (CRA) form.
  4. Check with supervisor what is required.
  5. Check with tech staff what is available.
  6. Fill in and submit PRA, budget (and CRA if necessary) forms based on step 4 and 5.
  7. Organise a local area induction with supervisor (research labs) or Tech Staff (school labs). This is mentioned after module 5 of the SEBE Induction.

HDR students and staff

HDR students, Deakin staff and external collaborators, please follow these steps:

  1. Discuss your project with your supervisor and agree on materials and methodology.
  2. Download and complete a Work Safety Assessment from the forms page, unless you are working on an existing project. In that case, review and update the existing WSA.
  3. Complete further risk assessments (e.g. task RA, CRA) and Safe Work Procedures as advised.
  4. Enrol in Lab Safety Training for SEBE Staff, HDR and Honours Students in CloudDeakin (if the link doesn't work, follow this process).
  5. Complete the Lab Safety Training Induction (5 modules), and the relevant Level 2 Safety Induction (video and quiz).
  6. Check with supervisor what is required (chemicals, consumables, equipment).
  7. Check with tech staff what is available (chemicals, consumables, equipment) and liaise about purchasing.
  8. Organise a local area induction with Tech Staff.

Fieldwork

Any students or staff completing work outside or away from Deakin need to complete fieldwork or site visit training/inductions. Please refer to Fieldwork Safety on the SEBE Health, Safety and Wellbeing site.

Equipment/technique-specific inductions

All School of Engineering laboratories equipment and instrumentation require an induction. These inductions are equipment-specific and allow the inductee to work in the area operating specific machinery, i.e. specialised power tools, experimental rigs, specialised scientific equipment, mills, 3D printer etc. Please contact your relevant local Tech Officer for equipment specific inductions. You must have all lab inductions and safety documentation in place before being granted permission for equipment inductions.
