Psychology inherent requirements
These inherent requirements apply to the following professional training courses:
- H744 Master of Professional Psychology
- H752 Master of Psychology (Organisational)
- H750 Master of Psychology (Clinical)
- H951 Doctor of Psychology (Clinical)
The School of Psychology, Deakin University, is committed to supporting the rights of all people who seek professional training in psychology. This commitment includes making reasonable adjustments to teaching and learning, assessment tasks, practice, practicum and other activities to accommodate the impact of any disabilities or medical conditions that students may have without compromising the academic integrity of the program.
Progression through our professional training courses is contingent on demonstrating professional attitudes and behaviour throughout the course, in line with the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics, as well the various guidelines adopted by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) - a partner board of the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority (AHPRA) www.psychologyboard.gov.au/.Learning tasks and assessments are linked to these expectations as they are deemed essential for the practice of psychology.
Inherent requirements are those skills, values and behaviours which must be demonstrated by students in order that they successfully complete the program of study. As a guide for prospective and current students, a series of inherent requirement statements have been developed that relate to student admission and progression through the course. These requirements are mandatory; however, there may be some flexibility in how they can be demonstrated.
The statements fall under eight domains consisting of ethical behaviour, behavioural stability, legal, communication, cognition, relational skills, reflective skills and sustainable performance. Many of the activities associated with the professional practice of a registered psychologist are time sensitive, where the capacity to perform certain activities within specified time limits is required to reduce or avoid risks to patient safety and wellbeing. The safety and wellbeing of you and others is always of paramount importance.

If you are intending to apply for or are currently enrolled in one of the professional training courses in the School of Psychology, you should look at these inherent requirement statements and think about whether you may experience challenges in meeting these requirements. If you think you may experience challenges related to your disability, chronic health condition or any other reason, you should discuss your concerns with the Course Director and/or a Disability Liaison Officer at Deakin’s Disability Resource Centre.
These staff can work collaboratively with you to determine reasonable adjustments to assist you to meet the Inherent Requirements. In the case where it is determined that Inherent Requirements cannot be met with reasonable adjustments, the University staff can provide guidance regarding other study options.
Each inherent requirement is comprised of the following five levels:
- Level 1 - introduction to the inherent requirement
- Level 2 - description of what the inherent requirement is
- Level 3 - explanation of why this is an inherent requirement of the course
- Level 4 - the nature of any adjustments that may be made to allow you to meet the requirement
- Level 5 - examples of things you must be able to do to show you've met the requirement

4 | Adjustments must not compromise the codes, guidelines and policies of the Psychology Board of Australia or result in unethical behaviour. |

Other issues
Students with a criminal record are not precluded from enrolling at Deakin but may face difficulties in obtaining placements, which are required to complete their degree.
Most placement agencies require students to obtain a police check and/or a Working with Children Check and may decline to accept a student on placement due to the nature of the information about their offending and the timing of the last offence.
Deakin recommends, but does not require, students to be immunised for the Hepatitis B infection.
Students are a potential source of infection for service users and colleagues and may be required to comply with any requirements for immunisation as specified by a particular placement provider.
Students who have not been immunised may be limited in the placement opportunities available to them.
