Biological imaging facility

The School of Medicine Biological Imaging Facility (SoM-BIF) provides optical imaging equipment for Deakin researchers and students, as well as researchers in the greater Geelong region.

Technologies supported by SoM-BIF currently include light microscopy, fluorescent microscopy and confocal microscopy. In addition we offer support for your study design, sample imaging and data analyses.

All users must be familiar with the booking rules, associated usage costs, usage guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs). If you are new user, please follow the steps on the 'first time user”' tab to get started.

In the event of urgent lab matters such as spills, broken equipment or alike, please contact:

Elizabeth Laidlaw
Laboratory manager
(03) 5227 1030

Instruments listed in the table below are the SoM-BIF fluorescent microscopes with their cost and locations indicated. Prior to using any of the below equipment, please follow steps on “new user” tab to obtain necessary training and information of each of the equipment.

Cancellation policy

Cancellations can be made with minimum of 24 hour notice. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will be charged 1 hour booking time and no-shows will be charged in full.

Workshops

The facility will provide workshops within the area of optical imaging, data analyses and software use. Information about upcoming workshops will be posted on SoM Research Facilities Deakin cloud page.

Training

Training will be required before usage of any of the listed facility equipment. Training will also include one-on-one or small group introduction to the microscope. .

Consultation

We provide free of charge assistance in study design and trouble shooting. Please contact the facility for further information.

Please follow the steps indicated below to obtain access to our facilities.

  1. First time consultation
Prior to training on a piece of equipment and commencing imaging work, we would like to meet with you and your supervisor to discuss your project and make sure your supervisor supports your experiments, including all associated costs. Prior to this meeting, please fill out the user/project agreement form (Please contact us for further information)
  2. Part 1 training.
We will provide you with introductory material for:
    1. The particular instrument
    2. Booking system
  3. Part 2 training.
This session will consist of one-on-one or small group hands-on training to the instrument. You will learn about the rules associated with the instrument, how to turn the instrument on and off as well as how to operate the instrument and software. This session usually takes approximately 2 hours. You are required to have completed both step 1 to 2 (consultation and part1 training) prior to attending the training session.
