Internship – MWL318 and MWL718

Internship units MWL318 and MLW718 are available to students who have secured a short-term professional level business internship or placement. Internships must be pre-approved by the Faculty WIL team, who will provide enrolment support prior to you starting your internship.

Internships that have commenced prior to approval and enrolment are ineligible to count towards this unit.

Key requirements

Internships must be between 80-160 hours.
Internships must be in a new, professional role related to your business studies. Current or former workplaces are ineligible for this unit.
Roles such as customer service, retail or sales also do not qualify for this unit.
Host organisations must have at least 5 employees or supporting staff.
Internships where any actual or perceived conflict of interest with the host will not be approved. Examples may include having a family or financial connection with the host organisation.
Applications must be submitted at least 10 business days prior to commencing any internship, and before the set university enrolment deadlines. Applications after you have already commenced are strictly not accepted.

Additional features

Deakin will provide insurance for all unpaid internships.
Internships can be taken at almost any time of the year. You will be enrolled in the trimester where your internship mostly occurs, and assessments are set based on your start and end date.
Paid internships can be longer than 160 hours, but you will be assessed only up to 160 hours.
Internships can be undertaken almost anywhere: locally, internationally, online.

Submitting your internship for credit

Whether you have self-sourced your internship or been accepted for a faculty-sourced role, all applications are subject to final approval by the WIL team.

Ways to find an internship

Internships

Internships must be with a new organisation. There are many avenues to prepare for and source an internship, including:

regularly checking the DeakinTALENT Jobs and Internship Board for roles listed by the WIL team and external employers.
completing your Intern Profile so we can email you roles that align with your studies.
souring your own experience through professional networks and external job listings for formal vacation work programs and internships.
attending DeakinTALENT workshops and webinars to build on your resume and job search methods.

International internship providers

International internships are facilitated by University approved third-party providers who handle all in-country support and internship matching. Approved internships for the Faculty of Business & Law are:

individual or team internships in Indonesia with International Internships.^
individual or team internships in Malaysia with The Global Student.^

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you are already employed, it may be possible to utilise your current workplace for WIL if you meet the criteria for Recognition of Prior Leaning (RPL).

RPL is only available to students who have MWL318 or MWL718 as a core or course elective in their degree. If you are unsure of your course rules, please ensure you check with a student adviser prior to making your application.

If you have a minimum of 3 years full-time Australian work experience (within the last 5 years), in a discipline-related role, you may be eligible to apply for RPL. Postgraduate students must also have demonstrated leadership experience. Bachelor of Property and Real Estate students must have demonstrated experience related to their field of study in property and real estate.^

You must provide evidence of learnings, and your achievement against the learning outcomes of eligible unit MWL318 or MWL718 to support your application. Please note that you are only able to obtain RPL for one level 3 or level 7 WIL unit based on their work experience.

You are unable to apply for RPL for MWL305, MWL316, MWL317, MWL319, MWL705, MWL716, MWL717 or MWL719 based on work experience.

Applications are managed by Domestic Admissions and International Admissions and assessed in accordance with the RPL policy. When applying for RPL based on work experience, you will need to provide the following documentation:

a professional CV
the official position description of the role
a written statement clearly linking the professional experience to your course/major discipline
a written statement addressing the unit learning outcomes (ULOs). Please list each ULO as a separate heading and outline over approximately 3 or 4 paragraphs (400-500 words) your understanding of the ULO, and how you have met that ULO. This should clearly address how your work experience relates to each Unit Learning Outcome (ULO), of the unit in which you are applying for. Please note that your experience/in-house training should cover more than 80% of this content, and
a verifying statement from a supervisor/employer on company letterhead stating that they have read your application and that what you have stated is an accurate statement of your skills and knowledge.

Other useful documentation to include in support of your application include: evidence of training programmes attended, references from employers outlining your responsibilities, letters from clients, evaluations from supervisors, job descriptions, documented work tasks etc.

Key dates and FAQs

This unit is available in all three trimesters. You must first apply to the WIL team as it is not possible to self-enrol in this unit.

MWL318/MWL718 is a repeatable unit, but it cannot be undertaken twice in the same trimester, or twice with the same host organisation.
