Wimmera Placement Plus is a department-funded initiative designed to enhance Pre-Service Teacher (PST) placements through a partnership between Deakin University, Australian Catholic University, and Federation University. This program offers PSTs a rich, supportive, and practical teaching experience in the southwest region of Victoria.
Program highlights
The program collaborates with 33 Victorian government schools, all eager to host PSTs. These schools have undergone targeted training to provide the best mentorship possible, ensuring optimal growth for pre-service teachers. Both mentors and PSTs receive specialised training and resources to ensure a smooth transition to professional practice, tailored to the specific needs of local schools and communities.
Key features
Two dedicated Site Directors work closely with host schools and the wider school community. They guide PSTs through their placement experience, aligning practices with AITSL standards, facilitating community integration, and providing logistical assistance. This comprehensive support includes in-person visits to PSTs and schools, close collaboration with school mentors, and opportunities for community integration and peer PST connection events.
Additional benefits
PSTs receive financial support through the Pre-Service Teacher Placement Grant (PPG) for placements in regional and remote areas. They can also complete Berry Street's trauma-informed training, usually worth over $400, at no cost. This training equips PSTs with essential skills for managing diverse classroom environments and fostering student well-being, adding significant value to their resumes.

The program offers a rich rural experience with potential employment opportunities. PSTs can build connections with fellow PSTs and engage with the community through various events. They also have the chance to participate in community projects and help generate valuable resources for the community.
