Weighted Average Mark
The Weighted Average Mark (WAM) for a course is calculated as follows:
Sum of (number of credit points for unit x mark for unit)/ total number of credit points.
For the purposes of the calculation:
- Only units studied by a student at Deakin University will be included. This excludes units completed at another institution under a cross-institutional study arrangement or for which credit towards a Deakin course has been granted.
- Units will not be included with the following grades recorded in 2020: NA, NB, NC, XN, WN
- Units will be included where any of the following grades have been achieved: HD, D, C, P, N, PC
The following marks will be used for the purposes of the calculation:
Grade | Mark used |
---|---|
HD, D, C, P | Assigned mark |
PC | 50 |
N | 0 |
For combined course
The calculation of the WAM for a course that is a component of a combined or dual course only includes the units that are undertaken as part of the component course. For example, for a combined Bachelor of A/Bachelor of B consisting of 32 credit points in total, the calculation of the WAM for course A will include the units (16 credit points) that are undertaken as part of course A and the calculation of the WAM for course B will include the units (16 credit points) that are undertaken as part of course B.
For combined course which consist of 40 credit points in total, the calculation would be based on a 16/24 split.
There may be variations to the 16/16 or 16/24 splits depending on the combined course structure as outlined in the relevant accreditation documents.
Grades listed below are used for units studied during the honours year and are recorded against the course when a student's qualified status is determined.

Results prior to 1993
Originally founded in 1975, Deakin University has had important links with many other tertiary educational institutions throughout Victoria. Subsequent amalgamations have meant that the historical records of results for students who attended these institutions are currently held by Deakin University and are available on request as a Deakin University Academic Transcript.
Other institutions which in the past were affiliated with Deakin University are:
- Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education
- Gordon Institute of Technology
- State College of Victoria / Victoria College: Burwood, Prahran, Rusden, Toorak.
Prior to 1993 different grading schema were used at various institutions. While some appeared similar to the current grading schema, grade conversions do not necessarily correspond to the current grading schema. This document outlines grade codes for institutions and courses prior to 1993.
