School of Law exams
From 2023, the Priestley 11 law units have a requirement for students to have face-to-face supervision for the end-of-trimester exam. This requirement is mandated by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB), the statutory body that oversees the admission of lawyers to practice.

You must follow the instructions of the exam supervisor
When attending exams at a Deakin campus or designated external exam venue, the exam supervisor has overall authority in the exam room. You must follow the instructions provided to you by the exam supervisor at all times, and you must behave in a respectful manner: rude or aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated.
Following the supervisor’s instructions ensures the integrity of the exam/s is always upheld and the exam process is fair and equitable for all students. If you do not follow the instructions of the exam supervisor, you may be reported for academic misconduct via an Academic Incident Report, or referred to the relevant Faculty Academic Integrity Committee for further action.
I'm late for my exam: what are my options?
You will not be allowed to enter the exam room if you arrive after the scheduled start time.
If circumstances beyond your control prevent you from arriving at the venue in time, you may wish to apply for special consideration. You must apply via StudentConnect within three University working days following the exam date.
- Please check with your exam supervisor that an incident report has been completed. The supervisor will retain the incident report after the exam and provide this directly to your faculty.
- In some circumstances (e.g. medical condition) you may be required to provide further documentation in addition to the supervisor report.
A successful special consideration application will result in a rescheduled exam in the next available end of unit assessment period. You may also wish to speak with a student adviser in Student Central for assistance and further advice.
Can I leave if I finish early?
To ensure the integrity of the exam process is maintained for all students, you cannot leave the room if you finish early. You must remain seated quietly for the full duration of the exam. Your supervisor will advise when the exam has ended, and all students can leave.
What if I am feeling unwell?
If you're feeling unwell during the exam, you can be escorted to the Deakin Medical Centre for assessment. Alternatively, you may be moved to another room and monitored until the end of the exam.
I’m sitting my law exam on campus. When will I find out my exam venue/room and seat number information?
This information will be released and visible on your StudentConnect EoUA/exam timetable 1 week prior to the start of the exam period.
How early should I attend my exam venue?
You should be present at your exam room/venue at least 30 minutes prior to the start of your exam session. You should refer to the relevant campus map for information around parking if attending at a campus. Make sure that you leave enough time on exam day to locate your exam building and room.
I’m concerned my typing skills are not fast enough. Can I hand write my exam?
Deakin has switched to online exams and assessments only and is no longer able to offer written/paper-based exams. You will complete your law exams via a computer and will be assessed under the same conditions as other students. Note that as well as the 2 hours of writing time, you also receive an additional 30 mins of reading/preparation/general support time.
Am I allowed to bring my laptop with me to the exam to access my notes?
Unless you are attending the MLP119 exam which requires you to use your own laptop/mouse to sit the exam, you are not allowed to access any other devices during the exam. You should either save your digital resources as PDFs or Word docs into your CloudDeakin locker or print off hard copy notes and bring these with you to the exam.
I prefer my own keyboard/mouse, can I bring these to use at the exam venue?
No, you will be provided with a keyboard and mouse in your exam computer lab. You are not allowed to bring your own IT peripherals to the exam venue.
Can I use my phone to access Deakin Single Sign On when logging into CloudDeakin for my exam?
You are allowed to use your phone if you need to access DUO for single sign on when logging into CloudDeakin.
I don’t have a Deakin ID card, what should I bring instead as proof of ID to my exam?
Make sure you bring another official form of photo ID with you to your exam; acceptable forms of photo ID include a driver’s licence/passport/national ID card.
Can I split my exam screen during the exam to have notes open at the same time as the exam screen?
You are allowed to use split screen to view notes and the exam page concurrently.
Can I use copy and paste functions from my notes into my exam?
You cannot cut and paste text into your exam. You must type your own answers during the exam directly into the text boxes in your CloudDeakin exam quiz.
Do I get a printed copy of the exam paper to refer to during the exam?
No, however, you will have access to the exam questions on the computer via a link to a Word document. You will have 30 minutes of reading/preparation/general support time on top of your writing time to review and read exam questions. You must answer your questions in the question answer boxes in the exam quiz, and not on the word document.
Can I print out the exam questions from the link provided in the exam quiz?
No, you must not print, capture, record or share exam content or questions. You must not use any other electronic device (including printers) during the exam, other than the computer used to complete the exam.
Can I start the exam late if I arrived at the exam venue after the designated exam start time?
You must arrive at the exam venue at least 30 minutes prior to the exam start time, and must start the exam at the designated start time. If you arrive late at the venue you will not be permitted to start the exam.
What happens if I start my exam late due to a technical issue? What time must I finish the exam and can I have additional time to make up for lost time?
You must finish the exam at the designated exam finish time. You must follow any instructions given to you regarding exam completion from your exam room supervisor. All students receive 30 minutes of reading/preparation/general support time; no additional technical time can be provided.
I have another EoUA/exam on the same day as my face-to-face on campus law exam and I won’t have enough time to travel between my exams. Is there somewhere quiet I can sit my EoUA/exam on campus?
Yes, you can request an on-campus space to sit your EoUA/exam via the registration form. You may wish to bring your own laptop with you on the day, so you can sit this exam/assessment on campus. Your request will be considered based on your individual case and the availability of space.
Am I allowed to start writing in the 30 minutes allocated for reading, preparation and any support requirements?
Yes, you can start answering your questions as soon as you enter the exam. We do, however, recommend that you read and navigate through the exam to ensure you are aware of the number of pages and questions on the exam. We also recommend that you plan your answers, just as you would in a pen-and-paper exam.
