Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
When you browse the internet, your movements and your data are accessible to others via the wi-fi network you’re using. To browse securely and anonymously, especially when working with sensitive data or files, we recommend you use a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
A VPN is an encrypted connection between your device and another computer (a server) elsewhere to use the internet. This allows you to browse the web using the other computer’s (server’s) more secure internet connection, meaning that your online activity is private.
Deakin has its own VPN, Cisco AnyConnect, that you can install on your personal devices. It is a program for your computer and an app for your portable devices (phone or tablet).
We recommend you use Deakin’s VPN when you are accessing or sharing files from an offsite location, especially if you are using public wi-fi. You can even use it to simply browse the web privately and securely when you are using public wi-fi.
You don’t need to use a VPN when you are accessing DeakinSync (or anything housed within Sync, such as your Deakin email) or using eduroam.
