World No Tobacco Day

We all know smoking is terrible for your health, and while it’s encouraging to see a general downward trend in young people smoking nowadays, research suggests the popularity of vaping (using e-cigarettes) appears to be on the rise in young Victorians.

While some perceive vaping as less harmful than smoking, the full health implications of vaping are not yet fully known. Vaping can still be addictive, fill your body with harmful nicotine and chemicals, and cause damage to your lungs.

The World Health Organization’s World No Tobacco Day falls on 31 May each year, and aims to highlight the preventable harm, disease and death attributable to global tobacco and nicotine use. The 2024 theme for World No Tobacco Day is ‘Protecting children from tobacco industry interference’, with the aim being to protect the health of future generations and ensure that the use of tobacco and nicotine products continues to decline.

Here at Deakin, we have a no smoking, vaping and tobacco policy to help eliminate smoking in our community, provide cleaner air for those who visit our campuses, and promote the evidence for good public health. The policy prohibits smoking, vaping and tobacco products on all our campus grounds, buildings and carparks.
