This session will help you to develop your advanced searching skills to support your research.  You will learn to select databases and other information sources for your search needs, to work with advanced search functions and search management techniques and adapt these for your own purposes.  You will also learn how to search comprehensively to situate your project in the existing literature, and how to locate hard-to-find material.

Some of the key skills we will cover are:

• how to frame your information need as a search strategy
• how to identify suitable search terms
• how to select databases and other information sources
• how to apply powerful search functions
• how to manage your search results and stay current with the literature
• how to find theses
• how to keep track of your search processes.

The workshop will be useful for all HDR students from any discipline area.

This session will help you to develop your knowledge of systematic and scoping reviews and other evidence syntheses in the Health and Sciences disciplines.  You will gain an overview of systematic reviews and other evidence syntheses, techniques for developing systematic searches, translating searches across databases, an introduction to searching for grey literature, documenting and reporting search strategies, and strategies for minimising bias in your reviews.

Pre-requisite – an understanding of advanced database search functions including subject headings, proximity searches and line-by-line searching. This content is covered in the Advanced Searching: Positioning your Research Project workshop.

The workshop will be useful to HDR students from Health and SEBE disciplines planning on conducting a systematic review or other evidence synthesis.

This session will help you to develop your publication strategy. You will learn how to select publishers and journals that will contribute to your goals and priorities, the individual and societal benefits of publishing research openly and the different routes for open access publishing. You will also learn how to use different tools to find and evaluate relevant journals, including interpreting journal metrics and rankings and how to recognise red flags across the scholarly publishing landscape.

Some of the key skills we will cover are how to:

• identify your publishing goals and priorities
• recognise the differences between green, gold, hybrid and diamond models of open access
• use different strategies and tools to identify a shortlist of relevant journals
• interpret and access journal metrics and ranking sources
• recognise red flags to avoid when choosing a journal, conference or other publishing opportunity.

The workshop will be useful for all HDR students from any discipline area. The session will also be recorded and sent to registered attendees.

This session will help you to develop your understanding of the responsible use of Generative AI tools in research and the importance of maintaining awareness of and compliance with policy and guidelines.  You will explore case examples of genAI use in different stages of the research life cycle and considerations for choosing and using genAI tools in research.
