Set up your devices and study space

Computing requirements

To make the most of your learning experience here at Deakin, you must comply with our computing, connectivity and capability requirements.

The basic requirements for effective study at Deakin are:

  • access to a desktop computer or laptop
  • connectivity to the internet
  • the capability to use our online learning environments.

So, before your studies begin, it’s important to make sure that your computer is reliable and capable of meeting your learning needs. It needs to have an up-to-date operating system and be able to run a modern browser and programs. You will also require access to the internet.

It is unlikely a smartphone or tablet will have the computing requirements necessary to complete your studies. These devices may complement a computer and be helpful in certain study situations, but you shouldn’t solely rely on them.

If you’re facing financial hardship and are unable to purchase a device, you can apply for financial assistance through Deakin.

Multi-Factor Authentication

All Deakin student accounts must have Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) applied to them within 30 days of activation.

MFA is a special security measure that you can add to your online accounts. Instead of just using a password, it requires you to input a combination of security information.

Deakin enforces MFA to protect all our accounts and data. We use an app called Duo to perform MFA to verify your identity when you log in to all Deakin applications (in addition to your username and password). You can download Duo and set up MFA on your devices now.

We also recommend you strengthen your passwords by using passphrases, and use a password manager to remember them.

Your study space

It’s a good idea to locate a dedicated space in your home that is conducive to study and will allow you to access your study materials and complete your studies effectively. A well-designed study zone not only helps you stay focused but also boosts your enthusiasm for learning. Consider lighting, the comfort of your desk and chair and make it a pleasant place to spend time by adding posters and a plant.

Online safety

Our lives are increasingly taking place in digital spaces, so it’s important to learn how to stay safe online, how to protect your personal information and how to be aware of risks and scams.
