How to intermit or discontinue
How to intermit
When you intermit, you are taking a break from your studies while holding your place in your course.
You are allowed three active trimesters or two active semesters of intermission during your studies. By ‘active’ we mean a study period in which you are required to be enrolled as part of your course plan. Should you need to intermit for a longer period, you will need to apply for an extended intermission.
If you’re thinking about intermitting, a student adviser at Student Central can help you understand the rules and advise the best path for you. It's best to start by speaking to them for advice. You will also need to intermit before census date to avoid paying unexpected fees.
If you’ve decided to intermit, apply in StudentConnect. You’ll be notified of the outcome by email, but please allow up to ten days for your application to be processed.
How to discontinue
When you discontinue your course you are withdrawing from any units you are enrolled in and you will cease to be a student in that course.
Discontinuing your course is a big decision. Before you discontinue, you should:
- consider taking a short break – you may want to intermit (see above) instead and resume your studies when you are ready again.
- get advice – we encourage you to speak to student adviser at Student Central, who can outline your options.
You will also need to discontinue before census date to avoid paying unexpected fees.
If you've decided to discontinue your course, apply in StudentConnect. You'll be notified of the outcome by email, but please allow up to ten days for your application to be processed.
