Natural disaster grants

Deakin is committed to helping students affected by natural disasters when they occur.

Natural Disaster Assistance packages may include the following items of support.

  • A grant of up to $1500 to replace essential study materials and supplies lost or damaged in the natural disaster
  • Assistance with emergency accommodation requirements.
  • Vouchers for groceries.
  • Interest-free student loans of up to $2000 and assistance with other financial advice.
  • Personal support counselling and chaplaincy.

Definition of ‘natural disaster’ for this grant

A natural disaster is a natural process or phenomenon that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage. It can include heatwaves, bushfires, droughts, floods, severe storms and tropical cyclones, earthquakes, tsunami and landslides.

Australian Government financial assistance

The Disaster Recovery Payment (DRP) may be available to assist people who have been adversely affected by a natural disaster administered through the Department of Human Services and Centrelink.
