Overview

Tony Ellwood is a leading figure in the Australian arts sector and the current Director of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). He received Deakin’s Alumni of the Year Award in 2012 for outstanding service and achievement in his profession. He is recognised for outstanding leadership and contribution to the arts in Australia.

Career path and highlights

Tony began his career as an Aboriginal Art Coordinator at Waringarri Aboriginal Arts in Kununurra, then worked as curator at the NGV, specialising in international curatorial projects. He was Director at Bendigo Art Gallery, Deputy Director International Art at NGV and Director of the Queensland Art Gallery prior to returning to the NGV as Director in 2012.

Tony has been on many state and commonwealth committees, including the 2003 and 2007 committees for the Venice Art Biennale. He is currently Chair of the Council of Australian Art Museum Directors and a board member of the Australia Japan Foundation. Tony won the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Trust for Young Achievers Award in 1990.
