Overview
Deakin’s sixth Chancellor has had a long and valued relationship with his alma mater. A commerce graduate (1982) and former DUSA President, John has been a council member since 2012, is the Deputy Chair of Council's Investment Committee and a member of the Finance and Business Affairs Committee.
Career path and highlights
The Financial Review's CFO of the Year in 2011, and in 2012 a recipient of a CFO Dealbook Award, John's contributions and achievements are too numerous and significant to accurately list. Throughout his extensive and influential career he's led the way in governance, finance, business strategy and risk management.
John spent 45 years in senior management positions at Telstra and was instrumental in the Telstra share float and the introduction of the NBN. In addition to his leadership roles at Deakin and Australia Post, John is currently the Chairman of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and the Business Reporting Leaders Forum (BRLF). He is also a Director of AGL Energy Limited and the Bionics Institute.
He received a Deakin Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and generously established the annual John Stanhope PhD Scholarship in Leadership at Deakin Business School.
