Preparing supporting documents

Make your application shine

Ready to apply for a research degree or PhD at Deakin? Gather all the necessary documents to ensure your application stands out and sets you up for success.

Supporting documents and information for your application

When applying for a research degree, you’ll need to provide a range of supporting documents. This is your chance to highlight your strengths, so be sure to include all the necessary information.

Resume or curriculum vitae

An up-to-date resume or CV is a must for your online application. Highlight your academic achievements, relevant work experience and any other qualifications or skills that make you an ideal candidate for a research degree.

Previous research degree

If you’ve previously enrolled in a research degree elsewhere or are transferring, provide proof of your start date and any intermissions or changes in your candidature.

Academic transcripts

Include transcripts from all tertiary education studies undertaken outside Deakin. These should show the qualification name, institution, study years, subjects or units taken, grades and proof of qualification completion. If they're in another language, provide an English translation. For international applicants, this information must be certified.

English proficiency

If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to demonstrate your English proficiency. Deakin’s requirements align with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) standards and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Prepare a research proposal

Before applying, prepare a brief outline of your proposed research topic. This helps us assess if we have the right supervision expertise available.

Proof of identification and citizenship

To confirm your identity, you’ll need to submit evidence of your citizenship and personal details. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Australian or New Zealand citizen: a copy of your birth certificate, relevant passport pages or a citizenship certificate.
  • Australian permanent resident: relevant passport pages showing your visa or a letter from the Department of Home Affairs stating your residency status.
  • International applicant: relevant passport pages that display your identity and citizenship.
  • Name changes: include proof (e.g. marriage certificate) if applicable.

For international applicants, this information must be certified. Domestic applicants may not need certified documents, but verification may be requested.

Evidence of your research publications

If you’ve published research, outline your contributions and specify whether the journal or conference was national or international. Submit a copy of the contents page and abstract for each publication – there’s no need to attach the full article. Your list of publications should include:

  • refereed journal articles
  • refereed conference papers
  • non-refereed conference papers
  • books based on original research
  • book chapters based on original research
  • professional research reports.
  • For each publication, provide full bibliographic references, including the author(s), title, name of the publication, type of publication (e.g. refereed journal article), and publication details (e.g. volume, issue, year).
