Preparing a research proposal

Turn your research ideas into a reality

Are you ready to tackle a significant challenge in your field? A well-crafted research proposal is essential for setting the stage for meaningful research.

How to prepare a compelling research proposal

A strong research proposal is the foundation of your research journey. It defines a key problem, outlines your approach and demonstrates how your work will contribute valuable insights. Follow these steps to create a proposal that clearly communicates your vision and sets you up for success.

  1. Find a research supervisor

Before diving into your proposal, identify a suitable research supervisor in your field. Discuss your research interests and supervision opportunities. Collaborating with a supervisor can enhance the quality and focus of your research proposal.

  2. Define your research direction

Identify the key direction your research will address. Clearly articulate why this direction is important and worthy of investigation, considering the context and significance of your research.

  3. Outline your approach and scope

Describe how you plan to tackle the research direction. Include your research design, methodology and specific techniques for gathering and analysing data. Clarify whether your research focuses on a specific issue or aims to address broader questions. Defining the scope will help manage expectations and guide your process.

  4. Set aims, objectives and expected outcomes

Define the specific outcomes you hope to achieve. Ensure these are measurable and aligned with your research direction. Outline the expected results of your work, considering how your findings might impact your field and who will benefit from them.

  5. Highlight the contribution to knowledge

Show how your research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge. Identify gaps in current research and explain how your work will help address them. Highlight what makes your proposal unique and how it builds on previous research.

What happens after you complete your proposal?
