Students step up to Professionals Week

Deakin Faculty of Business and Law students will be invited to 'Step in the Shoes of ... ' a range of business, law and industry professionals including accountants, economists, information systems analysts, lawyers, marketers and managers' during an exciting week aimed at equipping students with the skills they need to succeed after University.
Professionals Week which has been specifically designed to be relevant to both undergraduate and postgraduate students will see Faculty of Business and Law courses come to life with events, workshops, "real life" stories, workshops, guest speakers, seminars and 'hands-on" advice.
It will be held across all of Deakin's campuses in Burwood, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool, Monday to Friday, August 18 to 22. Organiser and Law lecturer, Claire Macken said highlights of the week would include the School of Law Oration delivered by the Chief Justice of Victoria, the Hon Marilyn Warren, a cocktail reception at the Melbourne Town Hall for Deakin's off-campus postgraduate students and alumni and a debate on ethics: "That the government should regulate the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Australian Companies".
"Professionals Week mobilises the partnership between the Faculty and the University's support services in careers and employment, academic student support, Deakin International, Alumni and Deakin Business and Law student societies to equip business and law students with a toolbox for career success," Ms Macken explained.
"Apart from workshops on preparing a CV, attending an interview, careers fairs and course advice, students will be able to gain an understanding of the other aspects of university life which create a well rounded graduate and attractive employee.''
"In 'Pathways to Professional Success', students can discover all of the opportunities Deakin University offers to them - whether study tours, international exchange, internship and practicum programs, further study in postgraduate and further degrees, competitions, student societies and much more.
"Students can also visit the 'Teaching and Learning Hub' - a place where they can concentrate on the development of key work skills such as working in a team and improving study skills
"Deakin has a diverse student population. To celebrate and recognize this, there will be a variety of seminars on subjects including 'language and culture', a Skilled Migration workshop by the Department of Immigration and a demonstration of excellence and leadership in communication with Deakin Toastmasters.''
