Honour for Professor Peter Hodgson

Professor Peter Hodgson, Deakin’s Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, has received the prestigious J. Keith Brimacombe Memorial Lecture Award from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology – a peak non-profit organisation with 17,500 members from more than 70 countries.
The address was delivered at the Association’s 2016 conference on May 16, at the David L Lawrence Convention Centre, Pittsburgh, USA. Over 7,500 people attended the three-day conference.
James Keith Brimacombe was known as one of the finest metallurgical engineers of the 20th century. He was an esteemed professor, who spent many years at the University of British Colombia in Vancouver, Canada, before becoming President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation. He died suddenly in 1997, at the age of 54.
“It was a great honour to be invited to speak at such a high calibre forum, in memory of one of the world’s leading metallurgists,” said Professor Hodgson.
“Dr Brimacombe achieved outstanding accomplishments in the area of process metallurgy. He helped to shape my own career, particularly around engagement and nurturing industry and university partnerships.”
Himself one of the world’s foremost experts on thermomechanical processing of steels, microstructure modelling and new alloy and process developments, Professor Hodgson’s address was entitled “Engineering Steels at the Nanoscale for Improved Performance.”
The lecture focussed on developments concerning microstructure control through advanced alloy design and thermomechanical processing. This technology has applications largely within the automotive sector, with potential to benefit other structural steels.
