“The Flying Dutchman” - the first of three immersive, 3D opera productions created by Deakin Motion.Lab with Victorian Opera (supported through an ARC Linkage grant) - has been honoured by Melbourne’s performing arts industry.
Based on Wagner’s opera, “The Flying Dutchman” was awarded two prestigious Green Room Awards at the awards ceremony, held at the Comedy Theatre.
Roger Hodgman received the award for “Opera Direction,” and Carlos E. Bárcenas received the award for “Male in a Supporting Role.”
The production was nominated for seven Green Room Awards over six Categories: Design, Direction, Production, Male Lead (with two nominations in that category), Male in a Supporting Role, and Conductor.
The Australian Youth Orchestra was also honoured at the ceremony for their work on “The Flying Dutchman,” receiving a “Special Award for Orchestral Excellence.”
The Green Room Awards are Melbourne’s premier, peer-presented performing arts industry awards. They recognise excellence and innovation across a range of professional stage productions, including Cabaret, Contemporary and Experimental Performance, Dance, Independent Theatre, Music Theatre, Opera, and Theatre Companies.
“We are very gratified and delighted that ‘The Flying Dutchman’ has been recognised by Melbourne’s arts industry through the Green Room Awards Association,” said Professor Kim Vincs, Director of Deakin Motion.Lab.
“We offer our sincere congratulations to Roger, Carlos and the wonderful Australian Youth Orchestra on their awards.”
Using state-of-the-art 3D scenery and imagery created by Deakin Motion.Lab, “The Flying Dutchman” immersed live performers in the turbulent world of wild oceans, the blood red sails of a ghost ship, and the beauty of the Northern Lights.
Its season premiered on 14 February 2015 at the Palais Theatre, with the 833-piece Australian Youth Orchestra.
“The Flying Dutchman” was also named a finalist in the Unity Awards for 2015.
