Targeted sanctions for overdue items
There are three forms of sanctions that we might use if you have overdue items:
- Suspension of borrowing
- Suspension of borrowing and access to library online resources, such as databases
- Encumbrance placed on student record
1. Suspension of borrowing
This may occur when the following happens:
- you have borrowed an item
- another client requests it and tells us they definitely want it
- you don't return the item by the due date
When this happens to you, we will notify you by email that we have blocked you from being able to borrow other items, or renew what you currently have on loan, until you return the item or contact us to discuss and resolve the matter.
2. Suspension of borrowing and access to library online resources, such as databases
This may occur when we have previously suspended you from borrowing, and you still have not returned the overdue item.
When this happens we will notify you by email that you will be suspended from borrowing and access to online library resources until you have returned the item.
Further suspension may occur depending on the severity of the impact that non-return has on other students, or if you have previously done a similar thing. The length of time for a further sanction may vary, but the average is approximately two weeks. The timing of when the sanction occurs may vary.
3. Encumbrance placed on student record
An encumbrance is a serious consequence that may occur when a student repeatedly disregards or abuses their borrowing privileges or the library Conditions of Use. The student will be notified by email that they have been encumbered and the reason for it.
An encumbrance placed on a student record means they will not be able to:
- access library facilities
- access assessment results
- receive academic transcripts
- graduate
The length of time an encumbrance may stay on a student's record may vary, but the average length of time is approximately two weeks. The timing of when the encumbrance occurs may vary.
Application to review my sanction
You can apply for a review of your sanction by submitting an Application to Review, or by speaking with staff about the situation.
We reserve the right to invoice you for a lost or stolen item.
