Our collection and enquiry services are available to all library clients while teaching, learning and research services are tailored to the needs of individual client groups.
Enquiries
Website
- Access to, and information on how to use, Deakin Library's services and resources. This includes electronic databases and e-books for research and study.
Collections
- Access to information and resources that meet the diverse needs of Deakin's communities. Collection acquisition, curation, development, management and maintenance is guided by the Library's Collection Governance Framework.
Search and discovery
- A range of discovery interfaces to locate Deakin Library content, including electronic, digital and print collections
- A 'My Library' account with access to personal details including saved searches, loans and requests
Interlibrary loans
- Copies and loans of items (which are not in the Deakin collection) sourced via sharing networks. Place a request via our interlibrary loan form.
Facilities and spaces
- Staffed and managed spaces to support collaboration, individual and group learning, wellbeing and focussed study
- Facilities include:
- 2,900 study seats
- 38 group study rooms
- four meeting rooms
- five teaching spaces
- four reset rooms
- two exhibition spaces
- two postgraduate spaces
- a First Nations designated space
- Equipment includes computers, HDMI cables, writable boards, LCD screens and power outlets. Equipment varies between locations and rooms.

Indigenous programs
- A collaborative service advancing Indigenous initiatives and fostering a deeper understanding of Indigenous knowledges, cultures and ways of knowing, being and doing
- Expert guidance on integrating Indigenous knowledges into the University's platforms
- Indigenous cultures information sessions and the promotion of cultural intelligence
- Assistance in embedding Indigenous knowledges across all facets of Deakin’s work
- Support for Indigenous initiatives and collaborations
Exhibitions and Public Programs
- A program of exhibitions, events and workshops across campus libraries that bridge education and research
- Collaborative exhibition-making that allows the Deakin community to partner with the Library to showcase research outputs, student work and cultural collections
Disability services
- Assistance in finding and retrieving physical material, photocopying and home delivery
- On-campus access to assistive technology such as text-to-speech and speech-to-text software
- Tailored support for alternative solutions to accessing Library Collections
- WCAG compliance
The University’s Disability Support Services provide further specialised support.
University Archives and Special Collections
- Collection and maintenance of records and resources which relate to the history of Deakin University and its antecedent institutions, and special collections resources which relate to Deakin University's research and teaching strengths. Such items require specialist storage and care and are of a significant, rare or fragile nature.
- The University Archives appraise and manage transfer of University records deemed to be retained permanently as University Archives.
- Specialist support on using special collections and archival materials in research or teaching
Member services
Deakin University Library provides access via the following additional memberships:
- CAVAL: Reciprocal borrowing privileges with participating academic libraries in Victoria
- ULANZ: For students from participating universities in Australia and New Zealand
- Alumni: Continued library usage for graduates and former staff of Deakin University
- Community and OUA: Free access to selected resources for community members, students and staff from overseas institutions
Copyright services
- Copyright information and support for all members of the Deakin community to create compliant work and materials
- Consultations and information sessions on compliance for projects, OERs, publications, educational content, exhibitions and web materials
- Evaluation of publications for copyright compliance
- Information and support regarding copyright legislative changes
- University contact point for copyright collecting agencies and support for university community in understanding agreements, royalties, notices, copyright procedures and policies
- Specialised permission service supporting third-party content approvals and licences
- Issuing ISBNs for university publications
Course resources and reading lists
- Provision and inclusion of Prescribed and Recommended Textbooks in the Library Catalogue (in conjunction with faculty and unit chairs)
- Support to teaching staff to make reading lists available online on Deakin's reading list platform, including prescribed, recommended and further resources
- Support in using Deakin's reading lists platform and embedding platforms into unit sites
Teaching support
- Expert advice to advance Deakin’s teaching and learning community
- Support and guidance for choosing, embedding and using scholarly resources in teaching material
- Learning experiences covering digital literacy, open education and teaching materials
- Consultations and advice on literature searching
- Support for embedding digital literacy into the curriculum
Open education practice and resources
- Collaboration and advice on open education teaching strategies
- Detailed consultations to delve into how open education can enhance teaching practices
