Gain on-the-job experience in product development
Take your IT skills to the next level with the Deakin Industry Student Capstone (DISC) program. Using agile development methodology, you’ll work in teams to develop and innovate cutting-edge products in fields like software development, Internet of Things (IoT), cyber security, EdTech, data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Gain a deep understanding of the product development cycle while receiving regular feedback from academic mentors and industry professionals. As you progress, you'll have the chance to pitch new features and even create entire product lines. Some innovations have even been deployed by Deakin or our industry partners!
The capstone program in action
Our final-year program challenges you to apply your product development skills in a real-world scenario. This invaluable experience will help give you the skills and confidence to launch a successful career in product development.
What our students have worked on
Culminating in an annual showcase, DISC students pitch their ideas to a panel of industry experts; some previously having represented companies like Microsoft, Google, Fitbit, Infosys Limited, ANZ, Telstra and intelia.
The program has produced some amazing projects, with Project Echo winning the 2023 National iAwards in the Student & Education Solution of the Year category. Other standout projects have included:
DriveED
Helping refugees and culturally diverse communities (CALD) navigate Australian life, DriveEd is a multi-lingual app that offers practice VicRoads' written driving tests. Users can choose between immediate feedback or practice mode, helping to build their confidence and knowledge to pass their driving test and gain independence on the road.
Serene Beach Calming Experience
Created with Luminal VR, Serene Beach Calming Experience offers a quick and easy solution to help reduce stress and anxiety. This five-minute virtual reality experience immerses you in a calming beach scene, engaging your senses and promoting relaxation. It's perfect for busy individuals who need a moment of peace without leaving home.
Image recognition app
In response to industry partner Oldowan's need to streamline their environmental auditing of large organisations' HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, a savvy team of DISC students developed an app that uses image recognition and machine learning to detect energy-consuming devices captured within a digital image automatically.
The hands-on learning and having the opportunity to put what you learn into practice as part of the course, is unique to Deakin.
