Women in Design and Construction Program

Designed for Year 9 and 10 students, this program aims to inspire young women to explore careers in design (architecture) and construction.

Program focus

This week-long program is designed to spark a passion in secondary students for women to pursue careers in design (architecture) and construction.

Over the course of the week, students will experience a variety of authentic activities centered around thinking and doing. They’ll gain valuable insights into how buildings come together and explore how innovative design can reimagine the use of materials in new and exciting ways.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to foster close relationships with industry partners, local communities and gain exposure to university pathways.

Key tasks within the program include:

  • sustainable thinking
  • design thinking
  • site analyses
  • model making
  • understanding plans and sections
  • scheduling
  • framing and structure
  • cladding and weathertightness
  • presentation to industry.

Applications

While the week-long program is at capacity, there is still limited space available for the Industry Forum and Workshop held on Wednesday 27 November. The first half of the day will see participants hear and learn from members of National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC) about careers and pathways. Later in the day, secondary students will be split into small groups alongside an industry practitioner and Deakin students, working together to explore potential solutions to a real industry scenario.

If you have students who may benefit from this forum and would like to know more – or if you’d like to express interest in getting your school involved next year – reach out to Elsie or Nick by emailing the Women in Design and Construction Team.

Get involved

Expressions of interest for our programs and activities can be made by a school representative, such as a career practitioner or year level coordinator/discipline teacher. If you're a secondary student wishing to attend, get in touch with your year level coordinator or teacher.
