Environmental engineering labs

Learn about air pollution, waste management, water quality and water treatment processes in our environmental engineering labs. Designed to be versatile and reconfigurable, the labs are used for a range of teaching and research activities.

Practical learning experiences

Gain practical hands-on experience to help you understand the fundamentals of environmental and civil engineering. As you progress through your engineering course, you’ll have access to a wide range of equipment including basic water quality meters, balances, drying ovens and furnaces. You’ll also have the opportunity to use more complex equipment, such as spectrophotometers and total organic carbon analysers.

The labs are available to staff, and undergraduate and postgraduate students completing their environmental or civil engineering degrees. Students undertaking their higher degree by research, as well as academic staff, also use the labs for research projects.

Environmental engineering research experts

If you have an idea for a research project but don’t have the equipment, our talented team of technical staff can fabricate a variety of equipment such as forward osmosis systems, low pressure filtration systems, membrane distillation systems and ozone delivery systems.

Check out our mobile water monitoring station that can be left on site to log water quality parameters such as conductivity, turbidity and pH as well as recording rainfall and flow rates. Through this research equipment, water samples can be collected after rainfall or high-flow events depending on the sampling program detected, and regular monitoring data can be accessed remotely.

Study with us

When you study environmental engineering at Deakin you get real-world experience via project-oriented design-based learning. You’ll undertake team-based projects and develop solutions to current industry needs, so you can hit the ground running when you graduate.

Lab equipment and technology

The labs have a variety of equipment including:

  • aerosol size and particle counter
  • biogas generation system with gas analysis
  • total organic carbon analyser with total nitrogen detection
  • water quality parameters with either HACH or Merck spectrophotometers
  • access to inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry
  • water monitoring station
  • jar testing equipment for coagulation optimisation
  • ozone treatment system
  • assorted filter columnsforward and reverse osmosis systems
  • membrane distillation equipment.

We also have a lab scale biogas generation system with gas analyser and air quality equipment, including an optical particle sizer and counter.

Industry partners

Our partners are valued members of the wider Deakin engineering family, not just our school. Opportunities to partner with us include work-integrated learning and industry-based learning and placements, student projects, commercial research projects and services.
