Your future as a health professional

Set yourself up for a career advancing the health and wellbeing of the community, equipped with excellent skills in person-centred health care. Deakin's School of Medicine fosters a culture of inclusiveness, respect and social accountability, with a focus on rural and Indigenous health care.

Our vision

At Deakin School of Medicine, we aim to enhance the communities we serve through outstanding clinical training and research. We aspire to address the workforce needs and advance the health and well-being of rural, regional, Indigenous and marginalised communities and individuals. We place a strong focus on excellence, innovation and work readiness.

Progressive, hands-on learning

Our medical imaging, medicine and optometry degrees are specifically designed to tackle rural work shortages in Australia and abroad. Our agricultural health program is highly valued in the health sector.

Our students spend a significant portion of their degree working alongside doctors and other health professionals on clinical placements. This means as a graduate, you’ll enter your chosen profession with plenty of hands-on experience and confidence in engaging effectively with patients and clients.

The Damion Drapac Centre

The Damion Drapac Centre

Deakin is honoured to partner with the Drapac family to advance socially inclusive medical education for generations to come. The late Deakin graduate, Dr Damion Drapac, was a passionate advocate for under-represented communities and closing the inequitable healthcare gap. The partnership ensures his legacy lives on, and inspires generations of impactful medical careers.

Train at our clinical schools

We’ve established clinical schools across Victoria for your third and fourth years of medical training. Each site is aligned with hospitals, health services and clinics, including Barwon Health in Geelong, Eastern Health in Melbourne and the regional centres of Ballarat and Warrnambool.

See where you could train

I hope to help rural towns receive the same level of healthcare as those in metro areas. I also hope to research how to bring about a more sustainable change in the healthcare system, especially with the health disparities that rural youth are facing.
