How to apply

If you’re an international student, follow these steps to apply for the Doctor of Medicine. Please note, if you are an International Medical University (IMU) BMBS student, you should apply via IMU. Please view the IMU specific entry requirement details on Deakin’s Doctor of Medicine international course page.

  1. Review the entry requirements and undertake the GAMSAT or MCAT

Before starting your application, read through the academic requirements for the Doctor of Medicine on the international course page. You will need to have your results from your Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admission Test (GAMSAT), if there’s an offshore GAMSAT centre in your country. If you haven’t undertaken one of these tests within four years of completing your application, then you need to book in and complete it directly with one of these external providers.

  2. Check the English language requirements for international students

You should check that you meet the English language proficiency requirements for the Doctor of Medicine stated on the international course page under entry requirements. If you need to complete an English language test, now is the time to organise it.

  3. Obtain and certify supporting documents

You will need to include documents with your application, such as academic transcripts, evidence of English proficiency and proof of identity (such as your passport). Most documents need to be certified and documents must be translated into English.

We recommend you include all documents with your application submission. This allows us to process your application quickly. However, if you are waiting for something, such as your IELTS result, you can submit an incomplete application. We can start to process it but cannot make an offer until we have all documents.

  4. Submit your application directly to Deakin University

If you are working with a Deakin authorised agent, they will submit your application for you. Depending on your nationality and country of residence, you may be required to submit through an agent.

If you choose to submit without an agent, use our online international student application service StudyLink Connect.

Applying as early as possible gives you more time to arrange your visa, travel and accommodation if your application is successful. Make sure you submit your application and all your supporting documents before the closing date.

  5. Attend an interview

After you apply, we may invite you to an interview, based on a combination of your GAMSAT/MCAT and GPA (grade point average) scores (50:50).

After your interview, your interview score will be combined with your GAMSAT/MCAT and GPA scores (50:25:25) and your final offer rank will be determined from the pool of eligible candidates. The number of offers made will be consistent with the available places and expected uptake.

If you do not receive an offer within four weeks of your interview, your application will be returned to the applicant pool and, if all available places are not filled, your application will be reconsidered in the next available offer round. If you are successful at this time, we will notify you then.

Offers and quota

Offers will be made to applicants based on rank order and the number of places available. This course is subject to a strict quota (15 places) and places are filled on a first come, first served basis until the course is filled.

To secure a place, applicants will need to complete the Offer Acceptance form and return to Deakin University, together with their payment within 3 weeks from the date of the Letter of Offer.

There are two payment options:

  1. Paying the Full Fee as shown on the Letter of Offer; or
  2. Paying only the non-refundable amount of $15,000 with the balance due by the end of September each year.
