Regional Victorian Institute of Simulation Education

We deliver research-backed, simulation-based training courses for health professionals at all stages, from students to qualified practitioners. Gain new healthcare skills or advance your existing knowledge in a hands-on, dynamic environment.

Optimising health education with simulation training

The Regional Victorian Institute of Simulation Education (ReVISE) provides a safe learning environment to deliver simulation-based training that improves patient care and safety. Our simulation programs can be tailored to students and clinicians across disciplines and career stages.

Based at the Geelong Clinical School, we also run existing national and international programs such as E-MET and BASIC. We aim to optimise health education through evidence-based practices and innovative teaching that promotes community, including rural and regional engagement.

Gain hands-on medical experience

We bridge the gap between classroom training and real-world clinical experiences. We currently provide programs targeted at all levels of training in the areas of:

  • advanced life support
  • basic life support
  • debriefing
  • deteriorating patient education
  • advanced airway management
  • crisis resource management
  • obstetric, surgical and paediatric emergency management
  • communication
  • trauma care.
Why simulation training?

Why simulation training?

Healthcare simulation replicates clinical scenarios so trainees can gain experience recognising and treating medical conditions. It allows clinicians and students from various disciplines to practise procedures, refine communication techniques and undertake multidisciplinary teamwork training. ReVISE provides a risk-free learning environment, where you can learn without the potential to cause patient harm.

#1 Victorian uni for facilities

When you study at Deakin, you’ll learn in purpose-built simulated environments and have access to cutting-edge technology. Graduate with the confidence and hands-on experience to build a successful career in healthcare.

Thanks to everyone for their hard work in organising the Trauma Supersession. It really highlighted the importance of communication and to constantly reassess the situation.

Programs targeted at all levels of training

Our programs provide a supportive environment for you to advance your skills across a range of clinal skills.

Simulation Facilitation

In our Introduction to Simulation Facilitation, Debriefing Skills and Simulation Familiarisation program, we cover learning in a simulation environment. We cover debriefing, manikin and technology familiarisation and how to run scenarios.

Paediatric SimCom

Paediatric SimCom is an innovative program for advanced learners. It combines communication training around paediatric goals, specifically caring for children with life-limiting conditions, with resuscitation training. It prepares trainees to respond to dynamic clinical and family environments.

Deteriorating Patient Program

Year 3 and 4 medical students at the Geelong Clinical School are exposed to a series of structured tutorials and simulated activities targeted at the identification and management of deteriorating patients.

Pre-internship Simulation Program

This innovative Pre-internship Simulation Program brings together volunteer simulated patients and experienced clinical tutors to create a hospital simulation experience for final year medical students.

UHG Supersessions

This unique model of large-scale simulation education allows 35-40 anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine trainees to engage in team-based learning. Nursing staff from these areas are also encouraged to attend.

Specialised life support

We deliver Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advance Life Support (ALS) refresher courses, as well as developing programs that are specific to areas or disciplines. For example, a radiology BLS and ALS simulation program was designed to diagnose and treat common radiological emergencies.

Complete Advanced Life Support Level 2

Our accredited two-day ALS2 course equips you with essential skills in cardiac arrest and resuscitation management. Through lectures, practical workshops and real-life scenarios, you'll gain hands-on experience and learn the importance of teamwork in critical care situations.

I can with confidence absolutely claim this has been the best run ALS2 course provider that I have experienced.

Advancing medical education with research

Our research is integral to advancing healthcare education through simulation, communication and clinical skills. We explore a range of teaching methods, from bedside education to reflective practice, aiming to improve medical training and patient care.

We collaborate with students, educators and researchers at all levels, contributing to the global body of knowledge in medical education. We’re committed to applying our research findings locally and welcome opportunities to collaborate with others in the field.

Our researchers

Our team, made up of experienced educators across all levels of health professional education, brings deep insight into the current challenges faced in the field.

Associate Professor Cameron Shaw is the is the director of the Geelong Clinical School and a neurologist that specialises in neuroimmunology, clinical process and communication education. His research aims to improve the medical education experience for Deakin students.

Dr Melissa White is an emergency physician and deputy director of simulation at Geelong Clinical School. She is passionate about simulation-based teaching and emergency pediatrics. She holds a medical education degree and has completed a Simulation Fellowship at Monash University.

Dr Kate McCloskey is a general paediatrician and director of simulation at Geelong Clinical School. She integrates high-fidelity simulation with communication skills training. Her research focuses on paediatric care, adolescent health and translating simulation into clinical practice.

Nigel Bellears is a clinical skills instructor and intensive care liaison nurse at Barwon Health. He develops and delivers clinical curricula for third- and fourth-year medical students, with involvement in medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, surgery and anaesthetics/intensive care rotations.

Bespoke simulation design enquiry

At ReVISE, we specialise in the design, implementation and facilitation of bespoke interprofessional and interdepartmental simulation programs. Our team has successfully designed and implemented simulation programs that replicate clinical environments and are cross medical and healthcare professions. Our programs have a quality and safety/systems-based focus. We have worked with departments including paediatrics, neonates, ICU, ED and theatre. We have also designed training days and regular updates for learners that range from internship to consultant-level learners.

If your department or team would be interested in discussing your simulation requirements, please submit an expression of interest.
