Empowering creative innovation

Deakin Motion Lab is leading the charge exploring the potential of digital and screen technologies to enhance our learning, work and entertainment experiences. We investigate the opportunities, constraints and implications of emerging screen technologies in real-life contexts.

Standing at the convergence of the tangible and digital realms and working closely with industry on innovative solutions, we provide expertise in emerging screen technology, motion capture, game design and digital design materials.

Our research areas

Deakin Motion Lab is an interdisciplinary research and knowledge community focused on digital screen experiences. Informed by cutting-edge screen and digital production expertise, the Deakin Motion Lab has three research streams:

Immersive realities

We research intuitive and playful interfaces that bridge digital and physical realms, enhancing human interactions and supporting diverse, practical applications.

Participatory screens

We explore the potential of new screen technologies to better understand life and culture, challenge traditional conventions and advance social inclusion.

Virtual production

We work with industry to develop new virtual production workflows that change the face of film production and enrich Australia’s film industry.

Because the night

Because the night

Because the night is an immersive theatre production by the Malthouse Theatre. The theatre partnered with Deakin Motion Lab researchers to create a digital experience using a game engine platform. This innovative method addressed the challenge of digitally preserving the immersive theatre production while allowing a digital audience to explore and engage with the story world.
