Study commitment

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

10 x 3 hour practical experiences (laboratory) per trimester, 1 x 3 hour online seminar per trimester.

Content

This practical-based unit provides students with exposure to advanced technical skills applicable to industrial biotechnology. The focus of these practicals will be in (1) selection, culturing and fermentation techniques, (2) separation techniques, (3) analytical techniques, and (4) enzymatic analysis. This skill set is in demand in a range of sectors from healthcare, food and beverage, waste management and environment, chemicals and manufacturing industries. Students will learn the principles of good laboratory practice and will be expected to adhere to them during their practical work. Students will advance their written communication skills with the preparation of formal laboratory reports and will demonstrate their scientific expertise using valid forms of data visualisation and analysis.

Hurdle requirement

To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must achieve at least 50% in the practical component, in addition to the normal requirement of at least 50% overall for the unit.
