Study commitment

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - online

1 x 2-hour online lecture per week
1 x 2-hour online seminar per week (maximum group size 12 students per seminar)

Note:

Students are required to attend (live, unrecorded) 80% of weekly interactive seminars. Student attendance at seminars includes compulsory use of a web camera which must be turned on throughout these sessions.

Content

This unit supports speech pathology students to develop the knowledge and skills to work in culturally safe and responsive ways with deaf people across the lifespan, within a framework of human rights and advocacy.

Students will learn basic, disciplinary-relevant Auslan and the theoretical, cultural and linguistic contexts of Auslan and deaf culture required to support their practice. Students will examine and develop culturally appropriate speech pathology assessment and intervention aimed at language proficiency through a mix of theoretical and practical learning.

Hurdle requirement

  • Needs Analysis and Intervention Demonstration - Must pass in order to pass this unit
  • Competency Assessment (Auslan) and Attendance - Must pass assessment and meet the attendance requirements for the weekly seminars (greater than or equal to 80% attendance) in order to pass the unit.
