Students are expected to familiarise themselves with the Speech Pathology Placement Handbook, along with any additional information provided about their allocated placement, prior to attending their placement.

Study commitment

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

2 x 2 hour on campus seminars in weeks 1-5
3 x 1 hour online seminar during placement (weeks 6-15)
1 x 18 day on-site professional experience (placement) from week 6.
*Note that placements may extend beyond the teaching trimester period.

In-person attendance requirements

Students are required to attend all on-campus seminars and all placement days.

Students will participate in a supervised professional placement of 18 days, situated within a speech pathology service. Students will be allocated to their placement by the University.

Students must communicate directly with Practice Educators regarding attendance on placement as outlined in the Speech Pathology Placement Handbook.

Note:

Mandatory Student Checks: Police Record Check, Working With Children Check, NDIS Worker Screening Check, Immunisations and other requirements.

Students are also required to provide evidence of their immunisation status, as outlined. Students may also have site-specific requirements that must be attended to. These requirements will be identified in your allocation email.

Students who fail to meet these requirements by the required date will not be able to attend placement and this will impede progress in the course.

Content

Students will undertake the first of four supervised placements in a professional setting. They will have the opportunity to apply learning and to develop their Professional conduct, Reflective practice and Speech pathology practice as outlined in the Professional Standards for Speech Pathologists in Australia. Students are expected to engage with speech pathology practice through observation, questioning, and implementing foundational skills in working with clients, families and communities. Students will demonstrate communication and interaction skills to evaluate client needs and provide speech pathology services with high levels of scaffolding and support from a Practice Educator. Emphasis is placed on learning within the placement, from speech pathologists and other professionals, and from peers, clients and families.
