Students will on average spend 300 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

1 x 3 hour on campus lecture per week
1 x 2 hour on campus seminar per week

In-person attendance requirements

Assessment 3 is conducted during lecture time and students are required to attend in person. Alternative arrangements will be made for students who require Special Consideration for this assessment.

Content

In this unit, students will be introduced to communication and swallowing as core functions of human life and will learn about changes that occur across the lifespan. Lectures will support students in understanding the anatomical, physiological, linguistic and social features of communication and swallowing, working within a biopsychosocial model. Theories of development and learning will be used to explore and explain communication development and forms and domains of language, and clinical and developmental norms will be applied to identify typical and atypical development. Students will learn to apply linguistic and phonetic analysis and will examine typical and atypical swallowing across life stages.
