Content

Feedback informed practice comprises Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) and Deliberate Practice (DP). FIT in Clinical Psychology refers to a pan theoretical practice approach whereby clients are administered outcome measures and involves the demonstration of 4 key competencies: (1) research foundations; (2) implementation; (3) measuring and reporting; and (4) continuous professional development.

This feedback then supports individually tailored interventions to enhance the engagement of clients, improve recovery trajectories and reduce the number of clients dropping out of therapy or deteriorating in care. DP in Clinical Psychology refers to a defined process of identifying an individualised learning plan for a clinical psychologist or trainee using quantitative and qualitative feedback from supervisors and/or clients to guide relevant support and professional development aimed at improvement in skills and effectiveness. These two contemporary practices are client-centric and target professional development in clinical psychologists and trainees in a way that will improve client outcomes and enhance their skills and confidence with a range of client presentations. Deliberate Practice is becoming recognised as a core skill for Clinical Supervisors, aimed at providing more real-time feedback to trainees and supervisees and scaffolding development.

This unit prepares students to understand the relevance of these Feedback Informed practices to clinical psychology practice and to apply this understanding in the development of clinical practice development planning, including individual practice improvement or remediation within supervision. Students will engage in four days of intensive workshops, led by experts in the design and application of Feedback Informed Practice. The first two days will focus on the application of FIT, and the second two days will focus on the application of DP. These workshops will be supported by a series of 6 one-hour webinars, designed to be viewed before the workshops to prepare students to apply their knowledge within the workshop setting. A highlight of the unit will be participation in individual coaching based on DP principles, aimed at understanding the application of DP in own practice, including for own practice development.
