This unit focuses on further developing knowledge and skills essential for critical care nursing specialty practice. The knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to assess and critically evaluate complex patient data will facilitate risk identification and inform clinical decisions. Content includes assessment and management of patients with a variety of complex conditions including sepsis and multi-organ failure requiring advanced treatment modalities such as mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy.
The management of paediatric and adult patients experiencing trauma, assault, burns, mental ill health, cancer and obstetric emergencies is also addressed. The critique of research will inform evidence-based practice to optimise the delivery of quality and safe care. The unit also aims to promote the application of teamwork and advanced professional communication in critical care settings.
