Department of Health – Safety Screening Requirements - Police Record Check, Working With Children Check and Immunisation Status

In accordance with the Department of Health policy, all students are required to undertake a Police Record Check prior to Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) in each calendar year of their course.

In accordance with the Worker Screening Act 2020, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) will not be able to undertake Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) and this will impede progress in the course.

Students are required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.

Content

In this unit, students are introduced to caring for the woman who experiences complexities in pregnancy, labour and birth and/or postnatal period related to existing or emerging complication or pathology.

Students will extend their understanding of physiological changes that occur across the continuum of care, to inform assessment and midwifery care where the risk of maternal or foetal complications has been identified. The role of collaboration within a multidisciplinary care model will be explored using the Australian College of Midwives’ National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral.

During 200 hours of Midwifery Practice experience (MPE) students will develop mindsets and apply knowledge and skills learned in this unit and previous units.

Hurdle requirement

  • Clinical Skills - Pass/Fail
  • Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) - Pass/Fail
