| Note: | Department of Health – Safety Screening Requirements - Police Record Check, Working With Children Check and Immunisation Status In accordance with the Department of Health policy, all students are required to undertake a Police Record Check prior to Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) in each calendar year of their course. In accordance with the Worker Screening Act 2020, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) will not be able to undertake Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) and this will impede progress in the course. Students are required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation. |
Content
In this unit, students will be introduced to various aspects of postnatal care for the woman and infant, providing the opportunity for students to examine the normal maternal physiological changes that occur in the postnatal phase and the adaptations of the newborn.
Students will explore strategies inherent to midwifery care that support the health education needs of a woman such as breastfeeding and alternative infant feeding options, immunisation, infant safety, and the potential emotional changes that may be experienced by the woman in the postnatal period.
During Midwifery Practice experience (MPE) students will have the opportunity to further develop mindsets and apply knowledge and skills learned in this unit.
