Study commitment | Students will spend on average 150 hours over the trimester undertaking synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities for this unit. This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site. |

Note: | Department of Health – Safety Screening Requirements - Police Record Check, Working With Children Check and Immunisation Status In accordance with the Department of Health policy, all students are required to undertake a Police Record Check prior to Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) in each calendar year of their course. In accordance with the Worker Screening Act 2020, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) will not be able to undertake Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) and this will impede progress in the course. Students are required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation. |
Content
Aligned with quality and safety principles, opportunities are provided for students to explore and develop essential midwifery knowledge and skills necessary for the provision of woman-centred care.
Students will develop beginning clinical decision-making skills necessary for the provision of woman-centred, quality, and safe pregnancy care. Essential concepts for midwifery practice such as communication, professional, legal, and ethical standards, physiological changes during pregnancy, and health promotion will be addressed in this unit.
During midwifery practice experiences (MPE) students will have the opportunity to further develop specific mindsets and apply relevant knowledge and skills learnt in this unit.
