Department of Human Services policy - Police Record Check and Working With Children Check

In accordance with Department of Human Services policy, all students are required to undertake a National Police Record Check prior to clinical placements in each calendar year of their course. Students are also required to hold a current Working with Children Check and will be required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.

Content

This unit is to ensure the successful transition of International Medical University (IMU) students from the IMU BMBS into Deakin’s MD program and the taught curriculum reflects the outcomes of curriculum mapping between the two programs for the equivalent course stage. During the first half of the semester, students will study: Public Health Medicine (specifically unique local aspects of the operation of the Australian health system); Ethics, Professionalism and Law (specifically the ethical requirements of an Australian doctor and the laws associated with the practice of medicine in Australia); and Indigenous Health (specifically the history of invasion in Australia and the health issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples). In the second half of the semester, students will study the Deakin Transition to Clinical Practice curriculum, which constitutes both theoretical and practical material, with associated clinical skills assessment, designed to prepare students for entry into one of Deakin’s Clinical Schools and to ensure public safety as students start to engage with patients under supervision.
