Content

This Unit covers events, experiences, and effects of trauma and introduces you to core concepts associated with the problem. The Unit introduces broad issues of trauma and trauma-responsive practices and explores the meaning and causes of trauma, impacts of exposure to trauma, who is affected by trauma, and how systems and institutions respond to conditions of trauma-impacted individuals. In providing trauma-responsive support to children and adolescents, professionals could be exposed to trauma stories that might result in ‘secondary traumatization’ or ‘vicarious trauma’. The unit will equip participants (e.g. teachers, educators, and humanitarian workers) with strategies for preventing and dealing with secondary trauma.
